Scope of Job
Provide administrative and technical skills necessary to operate and manage a laboratory engaged in performing laboratory analyses and tests required for research, development, or quality control.
Description of Duties • Manages all operations aspects and research activities of a laboratory involved in scientific research activities.
• Responsible for facilitating research activities in the assigned laboratory.
• Compiles, analyzes, and presents research data using computers and subledgers for submission to investigators to be used in preparation of journal articles for publication.
• Prepares journal articles and writes protocols for research as required by organizing and editing data.
• Conducts more complex experiments and analysis and trains others in these processes as needed.
• Establishes goals, and schedules and coordinates laboratory administration, including purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Ensures that all activities are in compliance with organization goals and applicable regulations.
• Estimates personnel needs to obtain lab and research objectives.
• Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training of employees; setting and adjusting their rates of pay and hours of work; planning and directing their work; appraising their productivity and efficiency for the purpose of recommending promotions or other changes in their status; handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.
• Management responsibilities also include the authority to hire, fire, or promote assigned employees or make recommendations that are given particular weight.
• Employees have impact on budgeting, controlling costs, planning, scheduling, and procedural change.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received General supervision from assigned supervisor.
Supervision Given Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related scientific field.
Preferred Education N/A Licenses/Certifications Use of standard office equipment.
Use of laboratory equipment.
Required Experience Five (5) years of experience with increasing responsibilities that are directly-related to the assigned laboratory, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience N/A Equipment None.
Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties.
Laboratory Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.
Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of personal protective equipment.
