0 Scope of Job We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as Lecturer I of Mariachi Trumpet, a 3-year appointment non-tenure track position in the School of Music.
This position is a continuing appointment position renewable upon successful periodic performance evaluations and budget availability.
The School of Music at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a full-time Mariachi Trumpet at the position of Lecturer I to join a collaborative team of faculty, staff, and students within our School of Music and Mariachi program to start Fall 2024.
This is a nine-month position.
In their role as Mariachi Trumpet Lecturer I, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching Applied Mariachi and Classical Trumpet students and assisting with the Mariachi ensembles as needed.
The successful candidate will collaborate with the faculty in the department at large and in the mariachi program and teach additional mariachi courses based on the candidate’s strengths and departmental needs.
The successful candidate will also be expected to recruit undergraduate students and cultivate positive relationships with faculty, university administration, and mariachi directors in the community and help develop a collaborative environment.
The successful candidate will promote the national recognition of UTRGV through student performances and will demonstrate a deep commitment to effective instruction and mentoring of students, community outreach, and professional development.
Successful candidates will be strong recruiters capable of broadening participation among members of under-represented groups; will engage diverse musical traditions and audiences through their performances, teaching, and/or public engagements; will integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and will provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.
The successful candidate will participate in service activities in the department as needed.

As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley, including but not exclusive to UTRGV campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES · Assist with Mariachi Ensembles as needed.
· Develop a trumpet studio of Applied Mariachi and Classical Trumpet students.
· Plan and lead music rehearsals of mariachi and chamber ensembles.
· Develop and engage in systematic recruitment activities that include but are not limited to off-campus high school visits, on-campus clinics, and workshops for area high school mariachi directors and students.

Department/College Background The UTRGV School of Music is located on the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses and prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities.
Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond.
The School of Music has over 400 students and over 50 faculty members.
Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Master’s Degrees in Music Education, Performance, Ethnomusicology, and Conducting Minimum Qualifications Earned master’s degree in a relevant field of music by the start date of the appointment.
Documented teaching and performing experience and accomplishments, including national and international performances with mariachi ensembles and distinguished artists in the mariachi genre.
The ability to contribute through performance, teaching, and/or public engagement to the excellence of the learning experience.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Experience performing and teaching in the mariachi genre; performing nationally and internationally with distinguished artists in the mariachi genre.
Demonstrated success in teaching trumpet at both public school and university levels.
Demonstrated success in directing or co-directing mariachi ensembles at the university level.
License or Certification Required? No Salary A nine-month based salary commensurate with Qualifications and Experience.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
