SUMMARY
The Drill Instructor (D.
I.
) Assists in supervising students assigned to the Alternative Education Program and performs responsible physical exercises and drilling of students, including disciplinary, guidance, and security work which may sometimes be hazardous while supervising daily youth activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
GED or high school diploma
Some college preferred
EXPERIENCE:
One year experience in supervisory or management position
Four years military experience
Drill Instructor experience preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS
As required by the State of Texas

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management and Organization
Conduct physical exercise and drilling of students.
Facilitate order and discipline.
Participate in all physical activities within the AEP.
Transport and supervise students on and off campus, as needed.
Classroom Management and Organization
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Assist in the supervision of students.
Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Supervise study activities.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Student Growth and Development
Display sensitivity, patience, and understanding of the problems of the AEP youth.
Conduct problem-solving groups as necessary.
Promote atmosphere of rehabilitation in delinquent youths.

Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and supervisors.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to speak fluently in both English and Spanish.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals.

Ability to speak effectively before administrators, staff, students, parents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent; and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Occasional absences are understood but regular attendance is required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk and stand, reach with hands and arm and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl for prolonged periods of time.
The employee is frequently required to sit, talk, and hear.
Light to moderate lifting is required.
