Animal Care Technicians are responsible for proper husbandry care of all animals upon intake, including feeding, watering, record keeping, and the cleanliness of cages, runs, and kennel areas.
In addition, the Animal Care Tech is responsible for the cleanliness of the shelter, and playgrounds, around and throughout the kennel areas.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Provides compassionate care to animals.
● Receives animals that have been transferred to property, prepares them for pairing, and placement, and is responsible for their proper identification and for recording their respective locations.
● Releases surgery animals to their owners as directed by the doctor; ensures that every animal released has to identify paperwork and pet medical records
● Has the ability to communicate with potential adopters and make them feel comfortable with adding a new pet to their family.
● Can follow a regular schedule for cleaning and sanitizing all cages, runs, wards, and related areas; changes litter boxes and food/water bowls.
● Can feed each animal according to policy.
● Understands the importance of prioritizing tasks and keeps oneself busy and productive during work shifts.
● Can maintain laundry for the shelter
● Responsible for cat-to-cat and dog-to-dog introductions, behavior observations, and creating open kennel space for the Animal Care and Movement Team.
● Can notate and report any signs of unusual conditions or physical concerns to the clinic department.
● Can notate and report any abnormal or inappropriate behavior problems.
● Can give shelter tours while highlighting features, services, and programs that differentiate us from others.
● Can recognize and report any unusual condition or abnormal behavior.
● Can assist families searching for lost pets or families adopting the right pet.
● Can administer booster vaccines, monthly parasite prevention, and microchips.
● Can properly restrain pets for revaccinations, microchip placement, and examinations.
● Understands and carries out the weekly and monthly chore list to maintain the shelter's cleanliness, equipment, and overall appearance of the shelter.
* Any other duties that they may be assigned.
*Minimum Qualifications*
* At least one year of experience working in an animal shelter or other related agency.
* Demonstrated experience in program implementation and management, as well as providing customer service and/or case management.
* Working knowledge of dog and cat handling and behavior, including pets with challenging temperaments and with severe health conditions.
* Ability to handle pets safely and with kindness always, without exception.
* Must possess and maintain a current, valid Texas Driver’s License.

* Must be able to use and understand shelter/medical software programs and other basic equipment associated with day-to-day operations.
Experience with ShelterLuv is a plus.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships and communications with staff, volunteers, animal control officers, and the general public.
* Ability to help establish and maintain best practices regarding sanitation, health, and animal well-being
*Work Environment:*
* While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and toxic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is very loud.
Frequent driving between facilities is required as well as consistent availability after-hours, on weekends, and on holidays.
