00 hourly - Status: Accepting and Reviewing Applications JOB DESCRIPTION General Statement of Duties: A Circulation Assistant performs general library work which involves the circulation of library materials, data entry into the circulation system, preparation of overdue notices, registration of borrowers, and handling cash transactions.
The employee has daily contact with the public which requires much tact and diplomacy especially when dealing with overdue notices and patron records.
Most training is on the job.
This is a non-exempt part-time position working 19 hours per week.
The work schedule includes evenings and weekends.
The Circulation Assistant is responsible for the following duties: a.
Assist librarians by helping readers in the use of library catalogs, databases, and indexes to locate books and other materials; and by answering questions that require only brief consultation of standard reference.
b.
Reserve, circulate, renew, and discharge library using circulation program; c.
Enter and update patron’s records on computer; d.
Provide assistance to patron’s by locating materials and helping to complete special projects; e.
Answer routine reference inquiries, and refer patrons needing further assistance to librarians; f.
Guide patrons in finding and using library resources, including reference materials, audiovisual equipment, computers, and electronic resources; g.
Train other staff, volunteers, student assistants, and supervise their work; h.
Sort books, publications, and other items according to procedure and return them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas; i.
Conduct reference searches, using printed materials and in-house and online databases; j.
Screens donated item for inclusion in collection, FOL bookstore, or to be discarded; k.
Deliver and retrieve items throughout the library by hand or using booktruck; and l.
Take actions to halt disruption of library activities by problem patrons.
Characteristics of the Class: Operates under the general direction of the Circulation Supervisor.
Has the authority to make decisions regarding the charging and discharging of library materials within the limits set by the Circulation Supervisor.
Knowledge and clear thinking are specifically required for situations that may arise due to patron’s records.
Constant supervision is not necessary for most tasks.
However, when help is required, employees in this class may consult the Circulation Supervisor for assistance.

Opens and closes the library to the public; b.
Charges and discharges library items; c.
Processes overdue and damaged materials and collects fines; d.
Makes copies and collects amount due; e.
Answers phone; f.
Assists patrons with reference, card catalog, and locating books; g.
Processes inter-library loan requests; h.
Shelves new books, magazines and newspapers; i.
Records library statistics; j.
Keeps library quiet; supervises part-time students on occasion; and k.
Audio-Visual duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a part-time, position, with a 20-hour work week.
Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends, if needed.
Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
This includes customer needs assessments, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Knowledge in the use of the following computer software: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Works, Excel, Word Perfect and Power Point.
Skills – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
Actively looking for ways to help patrons.
Teaching others how to do something.
Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
Abilities – The ability to read and understand the information and ideas presented in writing.
The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
The ability to operate a copy machine, book charger, reader, as well as audio-visual material if assigned.
The ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.
g.
, patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).
Physical Requirements: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls.
Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
No significant walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, crawling, handling, standing, pushing, and pulling.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
